Being Happy: How to Enjoy Life Like a Kid

In our fast-paced adult lives, it’s easy to forget the simple joys we once embraced as children. Yet, as we navigate responsibilities, deadlines, and routines, tapping into that youthful spirit can unlock a deeper appreciation for life. Here are three essential lessons that can help us rediscover happiness.

1. Being Present

One trait that all successful individuals seem to share—think Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, or even Tom Cruise—is an extraordinary ability to be completely present in the moment. They engage deeply in conversations, truly listening to what the person in front of them is saying without distractions. You won't catch them scrolling on their phones or mentally drifting off to plan that steak dinner they’ve been looking forward to.

So, I ask you, what are you in a rush for? Why allow distractions to pull you away from the richness of the present moment? When we learn to immerse ourselves in our immediate surroundings and conversations, we open the door to genuine connection and joy.

2. Childlike Wonder

As we age, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have seen and done it all. However, this attitude often dulls our sense of wonder. Remember how excited we used to get over simple things? “Momma, Dadda, look, an airplane!”

The awe we felt at the sight of an airplane soaring overhead has faded for many of us. It's surprising to realize that just a few decades ago, flying was a novel experience for most. Now, it’s a routine part of life. But why should it be? We can choose to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Allow yourself to rediscover that sense of wonder. Take a moment to look at the sky, appreciate the beauty around you, and find joy in the little things. Life is full of surprises if we are open to seeing them.

3. Practicing Gratitude

An important lesson I’ve learned through my work—especially helping clients reclaim their lives after enduring pain, mentally, physically, or spiritually—is the power of gratitude. The journey from a place of suffering to one of healing and fulfillment has given me a fresh perspective on what it means to appreciate life.

As the saying goes, living in the past brings depression, and living in the future breeds anxiety. Yet, when we center ourselves in the present, we find bliss. Each moment holds potential; take time to reflect on what you’re thankful for, and you might just discover a wellspring of happiness within you.

Conclusion

Reconnecting with our joy often involves rediscovering the simple yet profound aspects of life. By being present, embracing our childlike wonder, and practicing gratitude, we can learn to enjoy life just like kids do—fully, authentically, and with unbridled joy. Let’s take a cue from our younger selves and make room for happiness in our everyday lives.
